Culture shouldn’t be something that we look at only on an offsite retreat. It’s something that we do every day. Partly, how things are done around here! If what is done doesn’t support the stated Culture, then start with taking a thermometer of what people think about where you are now.
I’m of the belief that all companies these days are Tech companies in one way or another. The lines have blurred. Most companies now use technology so heavily to do their everyday business that they are becoming Tech companies.
To me this is the point of drawing together a team from all walks of life. Though I think we are more than our tendencies and we can learn other ways of thinking and doing… this is promoted by bringing together people with different strengths. The whole team benefits.
One of the interesting insights I’ve gleaned from my recent listen of Carol Dweck’s book Mindset is that things can take on very different meanings when you also consider whether they exist within a fixed mindset culture or a growth mindset culture.
Though we want out businesses to be a steady trajectory of strength on strength, we all know that that in reality it can be peaks and troughs. Goals sometimes missed or delayed. I think we have all seen environments that become toxic under these pressures. With finger pointing and fear permutating the culture, progress slows even more. If you build resilience into your teams, then it encourages the team to stick to the values of collaboration, determination and adaptability under any weather.
